SpoolView from Light Infocon Tecnologia S/A bags top US award
Using complimentary phrases like 'Spoolview’s numerous features make it an ideal printing-management system' to characterize the product, SCO WORLD magazine bestowed its prestigious Top of the World award on Spoolview in its April, 1997 issue.
SCO WORLD, published in the US and the leading magazine for SCO users (circulation of over 55,000 worldwide) reviewed and compared Spoolview version 4.0 with other print spooler managers. Spoolview, a product of Light Infocon Tecnologia of Brazil, provides Unix system administrators and users with additional control over their printing resources that are above and beyond those offered by basic Unix system software.
Results of the SCO WORLD review were conclusive. Spoolview was awarded the 'Top of the World' honor because it ‘handles nearly any potential printing problem, offers many useful features inexpensively and addresses important security issues’.
In addition to testing its installation which was found to be ‘a simple process’ and its documentation which was rated ‘excellent’, SCO WORLD tested Spoolview’s features and usability. Managing the printing queue was deemed ‘a breeze’ and Spoolview contained ‘several useful features which can benefit everyone’. Singled out was Spoolview’s unique ability to return an e-mail to the user upon completion of a printing request, very useful if there’s a long walk to the printer and/or a long wait for output. Also highlighted was the intelligence built into Spoolview such as only printing the remaining pages of a long output if a power failure disrupts the original printing.
Kival Weber, President of the Brazilian Society to Promote Software Export, Sociedade Softex, commented, "Spoolview is proof that Brazilian software can successfully compete in other markets. It gained the award in competition with well established, world class products as judged on technical merit, features, usability, installation and documentation. I am delighted that Sociedade Softex was able to support Spoolview’s entry into the US market."
With financial assistance from BNDESPar and Pernambuco S/A, Light Infocon went to the US and introduced Spoolview just over a half-year ago. One of the partners in the company, Jairo Fonseca, from his office in Brasilia said "The assistance from Sociedade Softex gave us a quick start. We incubated at the Softex USA outpost in Florida and that helped us to quickly establish our marketing, sales and support operation there."
Mr. Weber added, "The mission of the export program established by Sociedade Softex is to help Brazilian software companies export their software". "In addition to our USA outpost and similar offices in Europe, Asia and Mercosul, we provide technical assistance to software companies in Brazil and encourage financial institutions to support export efforts. Currently, companies with software for export can look at several sources in Brazil for funding such as CNPq, FINEP and BNDES."
Recently, Spoolview was selected as one of the products that will be published by a new subsidiary of Sociedade Softex in the United States, Southern Cross Software, Inc. The venture will normally be responsible for preparing, marketing, selling and supporting Brazilian software in North America.
Ed Baas, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Southern Cross expressed his confidence in the new venture and spoke about the advantages for other Brazilian software companies. "Spoolview was chosen by Southern Cross for many of the same reasons it won the SCO World award. We have also selected several other excellent products for publishing. While incubation with Softex USA is still an option, with Southern Cross, the developing companies need not concern themselves with knowledge of the North American market, funding or people to start their operations here. Southern Cross will do everything for them and pay the developing companies a royalty based on revenue."
